Ricardo-AEA has been appointed by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy to review and update the reference values that help to determine the efficiency of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants across the EU.
The combined generation of heat and power using CHP technologies is more efficient than the separate generation of electricity and heat. Under the Energy Efficiency Directive, CHP plants in schemes generating one megawatt of electricity or more have to deliver primary energy savings (PES) which are greater than 10 percent, judged as ‘High Efficiency CHP’, to qualify for financial support.
The harmonized reference efficiency values for the ...

Research shows that smoothing traffic flow could significantly reduce bus emissions
21 July 2014- Ricardo, Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach company and HORIBA have studied real-world bus emissions
- Measurements recorded on Euro IV, Euro V and Euro V hybrid buses operating on a central Brighton route
- Location of city’s poorest air quality correlated to disruptive traffic flow on critical bus routes
- Brighton & Hove City Council is using the research results in considering possible traffic flow improvements
Like many towns and cities across Europe and worldwide, urban air quality and the potential harmful effects of pollution on human health, is an issue of concern in Brighton & Hove. Cars, taxis, vans, public transport fleets and trucks each ... -
Ricardo Knowledge launches online benchmarking reports and training
17 July 2014The recently launched Ricardo Knowledge eStore enables customers to access the company’s most recent commercially available benchmarking reports – as well as to participate in Ricardo’s first web-delivered training course.
Ricardo is one of the world’s most trusted providers of objective and informed technical information on the very latest vehicles and powertrain concepts. While many manufacturers maintain their own in-house ‘tear-down’ operations in which they review the latest products to hit the market, few can do so with the objectivity of a fully independent, highly skilled and international engineering team such as Ricardo’s. For this reason customers have long valued Ricardo ... -
Ricardo-AEA supports Scotland’s next step towards a circular economy
16 July 2014Ricardo-AEA has been appointed by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to evaluate the role regulatory levers can play in helping to drive a circular economy in Scotland.
The work will build on the steps already taken by the Scottish Government through the launch of the Zero Waste Plan and more recently the Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources strategy which sets-out a vision for a more resource-efficient Scotland that sends fewer materials to landfill.
SEPA, as part of Scottish Government’s Circular Economy Evidence Gathering and Engagement programme, has commissioned Ricardo-AEA to look at the existing policy and regulatory landscape in Scotland and explore ... -
University of Brighton and Ricardo collaborate on engineering centre of excellence
08 July 2014The UK Government yesterday announced multi-million pound investments in University of Brighton research and building projects – including a significant project that will see an enhanced level of collaboration with Ricardo.
Ricardo has collaborated extensively with the University of Brighton since the 1990s on aspects of internal combustion engine research, including the use of laser-based measurement techniques, fundamental modelling and computational simulation. In 2006 the company and the University jointly opened the Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories where much of this collaborative research has to date been carried out on a wide range of projects including many involving Ricardo customers.
As a result ...
