The new Ricardo VERC is one of the world’s most advanced emissions test facilities, designed to accommodate the development requirements of the next generation of more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient road-going vehicles. A completely new, purpose-built facility, the VERC has been configured to allow for maximum flexibility and efficiency of operation. It has been designed ...

  • Engineering refinement and low noise – Ricardo opens upgraded vehicle NVH facility

    23 July 2015

With international regulations set to require unprecedented reductions in exterior noise – and automakers striving to achieve the ideal sound character for their new products – Ricardo’s significant upgrade of its Vehicle Anechoic Test Facility (VATF) at the Shoreham Technical Centre will expand the range of vehicles that can be tested, and represents a significant enhancement of refinement service.

The Ricardo VATF has been the development and test environment responsible for some of the most iconic vehicles engineered by Ricardo in support of its customers’ new vehicle programmes. Originally commissioned in 1993, the facility enables vehicles to be tested for their ...

  • New test environment will enable high-speed flywheels to be engineered for safety

    06 July 2015

The Ricardo-led ‘FlySafe’ research collaboration – involving a range of leading industrial and academic partners including the University of Brighton’s Centre for Automotive Engineering – has delivered a highly innovative flywheel safety test environment to enable the development of next-generation flywheel energy storage systems.

The FlySafe project is investigating the potential failure mechanisms and behaviours of high-speed flywheel systems. Operating at extremely high rotational speeds, these systems offer a highly practical and potentially cost-effective mechanical means of saving fuel and reducing carbon emissions through the mechanical storage and reuse of energy in applications such as regenerative braking. The FlySafe research aims to provide best-practice design guidelines for the safety containment systems of ...
